One of the biggest demonstrations the country has experienced in the Fourth Republic is the "Kumi preko" demonstration that took place in 1995. Leaders of the demonstration included Nana Addo, Kwesi Pratt Junior, Dr. Charles Wreko Brobby, Akoto Ampaw, among others. What was described as a high cost of living, particularly the imposition of the Value Added Tax on goods fuelled the demonstration against the Rawlings' government. Years on, Nana Addo is the president of Ghana, and according to Okatakyie Afrifa, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo is not doing any better than the Rawlings' government he demonstrated against in 1995.
Okatakyie Afrifa, a social activist and a former ally of the president, has jabbed the Nana Addo-led government for the use of tax as means to raise revenue to undertake development projects in the country. Speaking on the "Abranaa so" show, today, November 20, the outspoken media personality stated that, the Nana Addo-led government is worse relative to the Rawlings-led government he ( Nana Addo) demonstrated against in 1995. His comments came at the back of the E-levy which was proposed in the 2022 budget read by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. The Electronic Transactions Tax has been met with a huge public outcry, many calling for the 1.75% levy scraped.
Okatakyie Afrifa pointed out that, the body mannerisms of the president when giving speeches do not depict someone passionate about the plights of the people. He, therefore, said he has regretted ever supporting and following president Nana Akuffo Addo.
"... Nana Addo your policy does not find favor with the majority of the people, you are worse than John Jerry Rawlings... I can bet you honestly that I regret ever following Nana Addo because even if he is talking, his body posture does not depict someone passionate about the plights of the people", he said.
